Fertility & IVF Monitoring Scans

Our Fertility & IVF Monitoring Scan is designed for patients who require an ultrasound as part of a fertility assessment, ovulation monitoring, fertility treatment or IVF treatment.

This single booking option can be used for:

• Endometrial thickness or IVF lining assessment
• Fertility baseline assessment
• Antral follicle count, also known as AFC
• Follicle tracking
• Follicle measurements
• Ovarian response monitoring
• IVF cycle monitoring

Your fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor should advise you which assessment you require and when the scan should be performed.

What the scan may include

Depending on the instructions provided by your fertility clinic or treating doctor, the scan may include:

• Assessment of the uterus or womb
• Measurement of the endometrial thickness
• Assessment of the appearance of the womb lining
• Assessment of both ovaries
• Antral follicle count, where requested
• Measurement of follicles on both ovaries
• Monitoring of follicle size and development
• Assessment of ovarian response, where requested
• Relevant pelvic ultrasound findings
• Written ultrasound report

The measurements performed during your appointment will depend on the requirements provided by your fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.

Before booking

Please confirm with your fertility clinic or treating doctor:

• The type of scan or measurements required
• The correct day of your menstrual or treatment cycle
• Whether specific follicles need to be measured
• Whether an antral follicle count is required
• Whether your endometrial thickness needs to be measured
• Whether you require one appointment or repeated monitoring appointments

Please bring or upload any written instructions provided by your fertility clinic or treating doctor.

Important information

This appointment provides one ultrasound scan and one written report.

Follicle tracking and IVF monitoring may require several separate appointments during the same treatment cycle. Each additional appointment must be booked separately unless a monitoring package has been arranged.

We do not prescribe fertility medication, change medication doses, determine embryo transfer timing or manage fertility treatment cycles. These decisions remain the responsibility of the patient’s fertility clinic or treating doctor.

Scan method

The scan is usually performed transvaginally because this generally provides clearer and more detailed views of the uterus, womb lining, ovaries and follicles.

A transvaginal scan involves gently inserting a small, covered ultrasound probe into the vagina. The procedure will only be performed with the patient’s informed consent.

If a transvaginal scan is not suitable or the patient does not wish to proceed with one, a transabdominal approach may be considered where clinically appropriate. However, some requested measurements may not be obtainable with the same level of detail.

Preparing for your scan

Please follow the timing instructions provided by your fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.

For a transvaginal examination, you will usually be asked to empty your bladder before the scan.

Please wear comfortable two-piece clothing, such as trousers or a skirt with a separate top.

Your report

You will receive a written ultrasound report after your appointment. The report can be shared with your fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor for interpretation and management of your ongoing care.
