This scan may be helpful if you are experiencing urinary symptoms or if you would like an ultrasound assessment following previous urinary tract concerns.

A Thyroid and Neck Ultrasound Scan is used to assess the thyroid gland and relevant structures in the front and sides of the neck.

The thyroid is a small gland located at the front of the lower neck. Ultrasound can assess its size, shape and general appearance and may help identify visible changes such as thyroid nodules, cysts or enlargement.

The scan may also include assessment of relevant lymph nodes in the neck where clinically appropriate.

What does the scan include?

During your appointment, the sonographer will assess:

• The right and left lobes of the thyroid gland
• The thyroid isthmus, which connects the two thyroid lobes
• The size, shape and general appearance of the thyroid
• The texture of the thyroid tissue
• Any visible thyroid nodules or cysts.
• Parathyroid glands ( when indicated).
• Salivary glands ( parotid and submandibular glands ).
• The size, position and ultrasound appearance of any visible thyroid abnormality
• Relevant lymph nodes in the neck, where clinically appropriate
• A specific localised neck lump, where it is suitable for ultrasound assessment
• Blood flow within the thyroid or an identified abnormality, where clinically appropriate

Who may benefit from this scan?

This scan may be suitable if you have concerns such as:

• A known or suspected thyroid nodule
• A lump or swelling at the front of the lower neck
• An enlarged thyroid gland or suspected goitre
• A feeling of fullness or pressure in the thyroid area
• A previously identified thyroid cyst or nodule requiring ultrasound follow-up
• Thyroid asymmetry
• A localised neck lump that has already been medically assessed
• A healthcare professional has recommended a thyroid or neck ultrasound
• Abnormal thyroid blood-test results where ultrasound assessment has also been recommended

An ultrasound scan assesses the structure and appearance of the thyroid. It cannot determine how well the thyroid is functioning. Thyroid function is normally assessed using blood tests.

Important limitations

This scan does not include:

• Carotid artery assessment
• A general examination of every structure within the neck

• A definitive diagnosis of the cause of a thyroid or neck lump

If an abnormality is identified, further assessment may be recommended. This could include blood tests, specialist review, repeat imaging or a needle biopsy.

Preparing for your scan

No special preparation is normally required.

Please wear clothing with a loose or open neckline so the sonographer can access the front and sides of your neck.

You may be asked to remove necklaces or other jewellery from around your neck before the scan.

Please bring details of any previous thyroid or neck ultrasound examinations, blood-test results, referral letters or relevant medical reports, where available.

Urgent symptoms

Please do not rely on a routine private ultrasound appointment if you have:

• Difficulty breathing
• Significant or worsening difficulty swallowing

A Soft Tissue Lumps and Bumps Ultrasound Scan is used to assess a specific lump, swelling, or soft tissue concern in one area of the body. The scan can look at the skin layers, tissue beneath the skin, and the underlying muscle area where appropriate.

This scan may help identify features that can be associated with cysts, lipomas, ganglions, hernias, fluid collections, foreign bodies, or other soft tissue changes.

This scan covers one area only. If you have more than one lump or more than one area of concern, you may need to book an additional appointment so that each area can be assessed properly.

For example, if the lump is on your arm, leg, abdomen, or back, please wear clothing that can be moved or adjusted comfortably so the sonographer can access the area.

Preparing for your scan

Please fast for 8 hours before your appointment. During this time, you may drink clear fluids. Black tea or black coffee may usually be taken, but please avoid milk, sugar, fizzy drinks, dairy products and fatty foods before the scan.

If you have diabetes, please do not fast in a way that may affect your blood sugar. You should continue to manage your food intake safely but avoid dairy products and fatty foods before your appointment where possible.

This scan may be helpful if you have abdominal or pelvic symptoms, or if you would like a broader ultrasound assessment of both areas.

What does the scan include?

Male pelvic assessment

Female pelvic assessment

The uterus, the lining of the womb, both ovaries, the surrounding pelvic area, the bladder, where appropriate, for female pelvic scans.

The sonographer may ask for your consent to perform an internal transvaginal ultrasound scan if it is clinically appropriate. This involves placing a slim ultrasound probe into the vagina to obtain clearer images of the pelvic organs. This will only be done with your consent, and you can decline or stop the examination at any time.

Preparing for your scan

Please do not eat for 8 hours before your appointment. You may drink clear fluids during this time.

If you have diabetes, please do not fast in a way that may affect your blood sugar. You should continue to manage your food intake safely but avoid fatty foods and dairy products before your appointment where possible.

Please drink around 1 litre of clear fluid approximately 1 hour before your scan and avoid passing urine before your appointment. A full bladder helps the sonographer obtain clearer pelvic images.

A Well Woman Pelvic Ultrasound Scan provides a detailed assessment of the female pelvic organs. It is designed to evaluate the uterus (womb), endometrium (womb lining), ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures to help identify visible abnormalities that may require further medical assessment.

Whether you are experiencing symptoms or simply wish to have your pelvic health checked, this scan offers a comprehensive ultrasound assessment performed by an experienced sonographer.

What does the scan assess?

The scan assesses the uterus (including the endometrium), cervix, both ovaries, adnexal regions, fallopian tubes (where visible), surrounding pelvic tissues, Pouch of Douglas, any visible pelvic masses (such as fibroids or ovarian cysts), and the position of an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD/coil), where applicable.

Who may benefit from this scan?

This scan may be suitable if you have pelvic pain, heavy or irregular bleeding, pelvic pressure or bloating, suspected fibroids, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovaries (PCOS), pelvic inflammatory changes, known benign pelvic conditions requiring monitoring, or general pelvic or reproductive health concerns. It may also be appropriate for reassurance, even if you have no symptoms.

What can this scan help identify?

The scan may demonstrate ultrasound features associated with uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, polycystic ovaries (PCOS), endometrial abnormalities, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory changes, pelvic masses, free fluid in the pelvis, malposition of an IUD (coil), and other visible pelvic abnormalities. Further assessment by your GP or specialist may be recommended where appropriate.

Your appointment includes a comprehensive diagnostic pelvic ultrasound examination, assessment of all relevant pelvic structures, a written diagnostic ultrasound report, recommendations for further assessment if required, and digital access to your report and images (where available).

Internal (Transvaginal) Pelvic Ultrasound

Your pelvic ultrasound may be performed:

• Externally (transabdominal) through the lower abdomen, and/or
• Internally (transvaginal) using a slim ultrasound probe placed gently into the vagina.

A transvaginal ultrasound often provides more detailed images of the uterus, endometrium and ovaries and may help improve the accuracy of the examination.

Your sonographer will explain the procedure fully and obtain your consent before performing an internal scan.

If you choose not to have a transvaginal scan, an external examination can still be performed where appropriate, although image quality and diagnostic information may be more limited.

Preparing for your scan

To achieve the best possible images:

• Please drink approximately 1 litre of water around one hour before your appointment.
• Please do not empty your bladder before your appointment, as a full bladder helps improve the external ultrasound examination.
• Wear comfortable two-piece clothing, such as a top with trousers or a skirt, to allow easy access to your lower abdomen.
• If you consent to a transvaginal ultrasound, you will usually be asked to empty your bladder immediately before the internal examination.

This is a targeted ultrasound examination. It is not a routine breast-cancer screening examination and does not replace an assessment at a specialist breast clinic when one is required.

Preparing for your scan

No special preparation is normally required.

Please wear comfortable two-piece clothing, as you will need to remove clothing from your upper body for the examination.

A Hernia Ultrasound Scan is used to assess a specific area where a hernia abdominal-wall weakness is suspected.

A hernia can occur when tissue pushes through a weakened area in the surrounding muscle or abdominal wall. During the ultrasound examination, the sonographer may assess the area while you are resting and while you cough, strain or change position.

This is known as a dynamic ultrasound assessment and can help make a suspected hernia more visible.

What does the scan include?

During your appointment, the sonographer will assess one specified area, which may include:

• Upper Abdominal Epigastric Area
• The umbilical area around the belly button
• A specific area of the abdominal wall
• A localised lump or swelling in Abdominal
• Soft tissues in the area of concern
• Any visible movement of tissue through a possible abdominal-wall defect
• The size and position of a visible hernia or soft-tissue abnormality
• The area while resting, coughing or straining, where clinically appropriate

The examination may be performed while you are lying down, standing or changing position.

Who may benefit from this scan?

This scan may be suitable if you have concerns such as:

• A lump or swelling in abdominal wall.
• A lump that becomes more noticeable when standing, coughing or straining
• A suspected epigastric or umbilical hernia
• A previously identified hernia requiring ultrasound reassessment
• A healthcare professional has recommended a hernia ultrasound

Ultrasound may help identify visible features associated with a hernia, lymph node, cyst, lipoma or another localised soft-tissue change.

However, not all pain is caused by a hernia, and ultrasound does not replace a physical examination or surgical consultation.

Important limitations

A hernia can sometimes be diagnosed through clinical examination without ultrasound. Ultrasound is most useful when there is a localised concern or uncertainty about the cause of a lump or swelling.

The scan does not include:

• A full abdominal ultrasound
• A full pelvic ultrasound
• Assessment of the hip joint
• Treatment or surgical consultation

If the ultrasound does not identify a hernia, further clinical assessment may still be required if your symptoms continue.

You may be asked to stand, lie down, cough or gently strain during the examination.

Urgent symptoms

Please do not book a routine appointment if you have:

• A lump that has suddenly become hard, tender or cannot be pushed back
• Severe or worsening abdominal pain
• Vomiting with a painful hernia or

• Inability to pass stool or wind

Following menopause, the ovaries can become smaller and may not always be clearly visible on ultrasound. This does not automatically indicate an abnormality.

Who may benefit from this scan?

This scan may be suitable if:

• Your natural periods stopped at least 12 months ago
• You would like a general post-menopausal pelvic health assessment
• You have pelvic pressure or mild pelvic discomfort
• You have persistent bloating that has already been discussed with your GP
• You have concerns about your uterus, womb lining or ovaries
• You would like an assessment of known fibroids or ovarian cysts
• You are taking hormone replacement therapy and have been advised to have a pelvic ultrasound
• A GP or another healthcare professional has recommended a pelvic ultrasound

This scan does not replace a medical consultation, examination or investigation by your GP or gynaecologist.

External and internal pelvic ultrasound

The examination will normally begin with an external ultrasound scan through the lower abdomen.

A transvaginal ultrasound may also be recommended because it can provide clearer and more detailed images of the uterus, womb lining and ovaries.

A transvaginal ultrasound involves gently placing a slim ultrasound probe into the vagina. The sonographer will explain the examination and obtain your consent before proceeding.

You can decline the internal examination or ask for it to stop at any time.

If you prefer not to have a transvaginal ultrasound, the sonographer may still perform the external examination. However, the ultrasound views may be more limited.

Preparing for your scan

Please drink approximately 1 litre of clear fluid around 1 hour before your appointment.

Please avoid passing urine before the scan, as a full bladder helps the sonographer obtain clearer images during the external examination.

Please wear comfortable two-piece clothing, such as a top with trousers or a top with a skirt, as the sonographer will need access to your lower abdomen.

If an internal transvaginal ultrasound is required and you consent to it, you will normally be asked to empty your bladder before that part of the examination.

Urgent symptoms

Please do not book a routine appointment if you are experiencing: Severe or worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, Very heavy active bleeding, Fainting or severe dizziness, Fever, Sudden or rapidly worsening symptoms, Symptoms that make you feel seriously unwell.

Please seek urgent medical advice through your GP, NHS 111 or emergency services, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

A Carotid Artery Ultrasound Scan is used to assess the main arteries in the neck that carry blood to the brain. The scan looks at the structure of these arteries and checks the blood flow through them.

This scan may help identify fatty deposits, plaque build-up, narrowing, or changes in blood flow within the carotid arteries. These changes can become more common with age and may increase the risk of stroke if left unchecked.

What does the scan include?

During your appointment, the sonographer will assess:

• The common carotid arteries in the neck
• The area where the carotid artery divides into internal and external branches
• The internal carotid arteries
• The external carotid arteries
• The vertebral arteries, where clinically appropriate
• Blood flow direction and speed within the vessels

This scan may be suitable for patients aged 18 and over who would like to check the condition of their neck arteries, especially if they have risk factors such as:

High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Diabetes, Smoking history, Family history of stroke or cardiovascular disease, Previous concerns about circulation or artery health.

An Abdominal Aorta Ultrasound Scan is used to assess the main blood vessel in the abdomen, called the abdominal aorta. This artery carries blood from the heart down through the abdomen and towards the lower body.

The scan looks at the size, shape and general condition of the abdominal aorta. It can help identify enlargement of the artery, known as an abdominal aortic aneurysm, as well as possible narrowing or changes caused by plaque, calcification or blood clot build-up.

What does the scan include?

During your appointment, the sonographer will assess:

• The abdominal aorta
• The size and shape of the aorta
• The iliac arteries, where clinically appropriate
• Any visible widening, narrowing or abnormal changes
• Blood flow through the assessed vessels
• The kidneys and renal arteries, where clinically required, especially if an aneurysm is suspected

Who may benefit from this scan?

This scan may be suitable for patients aged 18 and over who would like to check the condition of their abdominal aorta, especially if they have risk factors such as:

Family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm, previous finding of aortic widening, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking history, diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors, concerns about circulation or artery health.

Preparing for your scan

Please fast for 8 hours before your appointment. During this time, you may drink clear fluids only. Please avoid milk, sugar, fizzy drinks and heavy meals before your scan.

If you have diabetes, please do not fast in a way that may affect your blood sugar. Please continue to manage your food intake safely, but avoid fatty foods and dairy products before the appointment where possible.

Please continue taking your usual medication unless your doctor has advised you otherwise.

The sonographer will need access to your abdomen, so please wear a two-piece outfit such as a top with trousers or a top with a skirt. This will make the scan easier and more comfortable for you.
