Please choose the scan type recommended by your GP, fertility clinic, IVF clinic or treating doctor. If you are undergoing fertility treatment or IVF, your clinic should advise which scan you need and when it should be performed.
Transvaginal Pelvic & IVF Monitoring Scan

Endometrial Thickness / IVF Lining Scan
Price: £75
Duration: 20 minutes
Scan method: Usually transvaginal
The Endometrial Thickness / IVF Lining Scan is a focused pelvic ultrasound used to assess the womb lining, also known as the endometrium.
This scan is often used during fertility or IVF treatment when a clinic needs to check the thickness and appearance of the womb lining before the next stage of care.
The scan is usually performed transvaginally, as this normally provides clearer views of the uterus, endometrium and ovaries. A transvaginal scan involves gently placing a small ultrasound probe into the vagina with the patient’s consent.
If a transvaginal scan is not suitable, or if the patient prefers not to have one, a transabdominal approach may be considered where clinically appropriate. However, the image quality may not be as clear.
What this scan includes:
- Measurement of the endometrial thickness
- Assessment of the appearance of the womb lining, where appropriate
- Basic assessment of the uterus
- Basic ovarian review, where clinically appropriate
- Written ultrasound report
Important information:
This is a focused womb lining scan. It does not include full follicle tracking, full follicle measurements, antral follicle count or full IVF cycle monitoring.
If the fertility clinic has requested follicle measurements, follicle tracking, AFC, baseline assessment or IVF monitoring, the patient should choose the appropriate scan type instead.
Your report:
The patient will receive a written ultrasound report after the scan. This can be shared with their fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.
Preparing for the scan:
The patient may be asked to empty their bladder before the appointment if having a transvaginal scan.
Please advise patients to wear comfortable two-piece clothing, such as trousers or a skirt with a top, in case a transabdominal scan is needed.
Fertility Baseline / AFC Scan
Price: £75
Duration: 20 minutes
Scan method: Usually transvaginal
For adults 18+
The Fertility Baseline / AFC Scan is a pelvic ultrasound designed to assess the uterus, womb lining, ovaries and antral follicles.
This scan is often used as an early fertility assessment or as part of preparation for fertility treatment. It is commonly performed near the beginning of the menstrual cycle, usually between day 2 and day 5, depending on the instructions given by the patient’s fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.
The scan can help provide baseline pelvic and ovarian information that may be useful for the treating clinician when planning or reviewing fertility care.
What this scan includes:
- Assessment of the uterus/womb
- Assessment of the womb lining, also called the endometrium
- Assessment of both ovaries
- Antral follicle count, also known as AFC
- Pelvic assessment, where clinically appropriate
- Written ultrasound report
Important information:
This scan is different from follicle tracking or IVF monitoring.
If the patient’s clinic has asked for repeated follicle measurements, follicle growth monitoring, ovarian response monitoring or IVF cycle monitoring, the patient should book the Follicle Tracking / IVF Monitoring Scan instead.
The timing of this scan should be guided by the fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor. If they have requested this scan on a specific cycle day, the patient should book the appointment according to those instructions.
We do not decide fertility medication, treatment plans, embryo transfer timing or cycle management. The fertility clinic or treating doctor remains responsible for the patient’s fertility care.
Scan method:
This scan is usually performed transvaginally to provide clearer images of the uterus, womb lining and ovaries.
If a transvaginal scan is not suitable, or if the patient prefers not to have one, a transabdominal scan may be considered where clinically appropriate. Please note that the images may not be as detailed.
Your report:
The patient will receive a written ultrasound report after the appointment. This can be shared with their fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.
If a medical follow-up is recommended, the patient will be advised to discuss the report with their own healthcare provider or treating clinician.
Preparing for the scan:
The patient should follow any timing instructions given by their fertility clinic, IVF clinic, GP or treating doctor.
For a transvaginal scan, the patient may be asked to empty their bladder before the examination.
Please advise patients to wear comfortable two-piece clothing, such as trousers or a skirt with a top, so the pelvic area can be accessed easily if needed.
